What is EB-5?
EB-5 is a United States visa program that allows a foreign investor to obtain employment-based visa for a qualifying investment. The program has several requirements, most notably relating to minimum investment and job creation:
- either $500K or $1M (depending on the investment type); and
- a minimum of ten (10) full-time jobs
Proceed with Caution
While this is a simple depiction of the program, EB-5 investments can be quite complex and risky. As you know, it is difficult enough to start a business under your direct supervision in your region. Coordinating a brand new business overseas with additional investors is a monumental task, especially while attempting to comply with government officials and regulations.
Many foreign investors are unaware that the EB-5 program is also risky because there are fraudsters that specifically target foreign investors seeking EB-5 visas. There are a number of companies that work with foreign investors to start companies, but among these companies there are many that are looking to take advantage of foreign investors.
